Anguish
Anguish is sadness at flood intensity — acute suffering that seizes the whole body and demands a cry. Felt Sense. Sharp, total, now. The chest in a vise, the throat full, the body doubling over or pacing because stillness is unbearable. Anguish is the cry-band of the spectrum: it does not want words yet, it wants sound — the wail, the sob that comes from below language. What It Signals. Something precious is being torn, right now, at an intensity the system cannot process in stillness. Anguish is the pressure reading of a loss or a wound at peak flow — too much signal for the ordinary channels, demanding an emergency spillway. Its Gradient. Sadness → Sorrow → Grief → Anguish → Despair. It is the crest of the wave; grief's surges pass through it. Sustained without relief, it soaks into Misery. Its Gift. The cry is the gift. Anguish moves what stillness cannot: it discharges an unbearable intensity through the body's oldest release, and its sound summons others from a distance — the signal that this one cannot be left alone right now. A being who can still cry out is still in the current, still moving. Its Distortion. Refused — swallowed, silenced, composed — anguish turns inward and freezes toward Depression, or leaks sideways as rage. Enthroned, it becomes performance: the cry prolonged past its truth because only at peak volume does the sufferer feel real. The Move. Let the cry out, and let it be witnessed. Find the room, the Circle, the one person who can bear sound without fixing it — and wail. The body knows the duration; the wave crests and passes on its own schedule. After the cry, water, breath, a hand held. Words can come tomorrow. Related: Grief · Sorrow · Despair · Misery · Circle · Emotion
