Foreboding

Foreboding is fear stretched over the horizon — the formless sense that something approaches. Felt Sense. A shadow without an object: stillness in the chest, a faint animal alertness, the light of ordinary things gone slightly strange. Often quiet enough to override — a hum beneath the day that says only something. What It Signals. Foreboding reports that the deep instrument has read a pattern the conscious mind has not yet parsed — weather gathering in a relationship, a body, a system, a season. It is perception running ahead of articulation. Sometimes it is true signal; sometimes it is old fear projecting its weather onto a clear sky. Its message is not the worst is coming but look closer. Its Gradient. Kin to Dread but vaguer: dread knows its hour; foreboding senses only a direction. It hovers near Unease and Apprehension at the band's low edge, and deepens toward Dread as the shape resolves. Its Gift. Early warning. Foreboding is the longest-range sensor we carry; attended early, it buys time no other reading can. Its Distortion. Enthroned, it becomes fatalism — omens everywhere, the future pre-painted dark, Trust quietly starved. Refused, it becomes the hindsight lament: I felt it, and said nothing. The Move. Neither obey nor dismiss: investigate. Ask where does this point? and check the real territory — the conversation, the numbers, the body, the road. If something is found, act early and small. If nothing is found, thank the sentry, note the watch, and return to the day. Related: Dread · Unease · Intuition · Trust · Emotion
