Nervousness

Nervousness is fear's fizz at an approaching moment of exposure. Felt Sense. Effervescence: butterflies, quickened pulse, restless hands, a voice that wants clearing. The energy is light and rising — the body tuning up, not shutting down — in the minutes or hours before we step into view. What It Signals. Nervousness reports that a moment is coming in which we will be seen and something is at stake: a performance, a confession, a first meeting, an ask. It marks that we care how the meeting goes and that the outcome is live. It is threshold-energy — the same current that becomes presence once the moment begins. Its Gradient. A light shimmer low on the band, between Apprehension and Anxiety — the same current, briefer and brighter. Its nearest twin is Excitement: in the body a near twin — much of the difference lives in the story told about the threshold ahead. Its Gift. Readiness. Nervousness sharpens the instrument exactly when sharpness is needed; seasoned performers know the flat dullness of its absence. It is care, arriving as voltage. Its Distortion. Read as danger, the fizz curdles: the mind flees the moment before the body reaches it, rehearsal collapses into Worry, and the freeze called stage-fright takes the stage instead. Refused often enough, it teaches a life of smaller rooms. The Move. Rename the current: this is energy for the threshold, not a verdict against me. Breathe low, feel the feet, let the hands shake if they shake. Then walk through the door — nervousness resolves only on the far side, where it becomes aliveness.
