Shock

Shock is the reading that the update is too large to absorb at once. Felt Sense. The world goes glassy. Numbness where feeling should be, sound arriving from far away, time gone strange — too slow, then missing. The body may function while the self watches from behind a pane. People say it hasn't hit me yet. That is exact: it is being delivered in installments. What It Signals. Shock is Surprise at flood. It reports that Reality has broken the Map of Reality faster and more completely than the instrument can re-form it — a death, a diagnosis, a betrayal, a world-event. The numbness is not absence of feeling but the circuit-breaker of a Living System protecting itself: the full current would burn what it must instead rewire. Its Gradient. The far end of the suddenness band: StartleSurpriseAstonishment → Shock. Held too long past its hour, it shades toward Dissociation and frozen Grief. Its Gift. Staged absorption of what cannot be taken whole. Shock buys the psyche time — hours or days in which the unbearable arrives in bearable doses while the map quietly begins rebuilding. It is mercy, mechanized. Its Distortion. The circuit-breaker left thrown: numbness adopted as residence, the update refused indefinitely, life conducted from behind the pane. What began as protection becomes a wall against all feeling — Joy locked out along with the pain. The Move. Do not demand feeling on schedule — yours or another's. Offer the body warmth, water, rest; offer the self small truths, one at a time, each allowed to land before the next. Stay accompanied. The map re-forms in presence, not in argument. When feeling returns, let it — that is the current resuming, and it means the rewiring held. Related: Surprise · Grief · Numbness · Trust · Presence · Emotion
