Disgust

Disgust is the reading that something toxic or degrading must not be taken in. Felt Sense. Recoil and expulsion. The nose wrinkles, the throat closes, the stomach turns; the whole body says out — do not swallow, do not touch, do not absorb. It is the only emotion whose native gesture is rejection at the border of the self. What It Signals. Disgust guards purity at two scales with one instrument. At the body's scale it screens what enters — the spoiled, the septic, the contaminating. At the moral scale it fires at conduct that degrades life: cruelty, corruption, treachery, the profaning of the sacred. Moral disgust is a real and ancient reading — the Boundary of a community's health, felt in one member's gut. Its Gradient. A distinct current that braids with the Anger family: milder as Distaste and Aversion, and — fused with anger and aimed at persons — hardening toward Contempt and Hate. Its Gift. Protection of integrity: it keeps poison out of the body and degradation out of the Circle. A community that can feel no disgust at cruelty has lost an immune system. Its Distortion. Mistargeting. Disgust is calibrated for harms and substances; aimed at beings, it becomes the most dangerous reading we carry — the felt engine of dehumanization. The Old World's cruelest chapters began by teaching populations to feel disgust at kinds of people. The Move. Honor the recoil, then check its aim: is this a harm, or a human? Reject toxins and refuse degrading conduct without apology — and wherever the revulsion has attached to a being or a kind of being, stop, and deliberately re-aim it at the harm alone. Beings stay inside the circle. Related: Contempt · Anger · Boundary · Hate · Emotion
