Empathy

Empathy is feeling-with — another's state sounding in one's own instrument. Felt Sense. A subtle re-tuning: your chest tightens as theirs does, your eyes sting at their loss, your breath catches their rhythm before your mind has named what is happening. The boundary of the skin stays; the boundary of the feeling opens. What It Signals. Empathy reports Resonance between beings: the channel is open wide enough that state itself crosses it. It is the interfeeling by which a Circle navigates together — one member touches fire or grace, and the whole body knows. Where empathy runs, no one's weather is entirely private, and no one suffers entirely alone. Its Gradient. Sympathy → Empathy → Compassion. Sympathy feels for from its own shore; empathy feels with from inside the weather; Compassion adds the vow to help. Its ground is Connection; unboundaried, it slides toward fusion. Its Gift. True information about another's inner state — arriving as feeling rather than report. Empathy is how care aims accurately: it lets us meet beings where they are, not where we assume them to be. Its Distortion. Two counterfeits. Drowning: fusion with the other's weather until there is no shore left to help from — the one feeling-with capsized alongside the drowning one. And performance: empathy displayed as credential — the furrowed brow, the right words — carrying no current and moving no hand (Old World fluency in the language of care). The Move. Open, and stay sovereign: feel it fully as theirs, one anchor-breath keeping your own ground (Sovereignty). Let what you feel become accuracy — ask, confirm, adjust. Then let it move you: empathy completes itself in Compassion, or it was only weather. Related: Compassion · Sympathy · Connection · Resonance · Emotion
