Interest

Interest is the reading that something at the edge of the known is worth approaching. Felt Sense. A lean. The body tilts almost imperceptibly toward — eyes settle, breath quiets, the background dims a shade. Nothing dramatic: just attention gathering itself around one point like water finding a channel. What It Signals. Interest is the gentlest of the threshold readings. It reports that the Map of Reality has noticed an edge — a place where the Unknown shows just enough of itself to promise more — and that this edge, of all the edges available, may repay approach. It is the first stirring of Curiosity, the seed of Wonder: the map's quiet vote for where it wants to grow next. Its Gradient. One rising band of approach: Interest → CuriosityWonderAwe; its absorbed deepening is Fascination. Its opposite pole is Boredom — the reading that no live edge is currently in view. Its Gift. Allocation of the scarcest resource there is: attention. A life is finally made of what it attended to, and interest is the instrument that chooses. Followed honestly, it is a compass toward one's own growth. Its Distortion. Interest can be captured. The Old World built an economy on harvesting exactly this signal — engineering endless artificial edges so the lean never resolves into learning. Captured interest feels like interest but leaves the map unchanged. The Move. Notice the lean before something monetizes it. Ask: is this edge mine — will approaching it grow my map? If yes, follow it all the way to learning. If not, withdraw attention as a Sovereign spends gold. Related: Curiosity · Wonder · Attention · Boredom · Unknown · Emotion
