Our Core Ways — The Handful of Things We Do the Same Way
Everything is a process. Write down the few that matter, do them together, and improve them forever.
A community that keeps its know-how only in people's heads loses it the day someone leaves, and quietly does the same thing ten different ways in ten different corners. Core Ways are the short, written descriptions of the handful of processes that actually carry your Company — so the work is teachable, repeatable, improvable, and shareable. This is the LIØNSBERG conviction that everything is a process, made practical. Companion to Step 4 — Learning to Play The New Game and the canon's Everything Is A Process.
Find Your Vital Few
Do not document everything; you will drown, and no one will read it. Name the five to ten processes that, if done well and the same way every time, hold your Company together. Most communities' core ways are some of these:
- How we welcome a new member (see Member Onboarding Worksheet).
- How we run a gathering (see The Rhythm of Gatherings).
- How we choose and close a Quest (see From Driver to Quests).
- How we steward money through the value waterfall.
- How we make a decision (by consent) and resolve a conflict.
- How we welcome, seat, and thank those who hold the Seats for the living world and the unborn.

Write Each One Simply
For each Core Way, capture only the vital few steps — the handful that actually matter, not every keystroke. If it runs longer than a single page, you are over-documenting; cut back to the bones a newcomer would actually need.
‹Name of the Way› Why it matters: ‹one line › The steps: 1. ‹ › 2. ‹ › 3. ‹ › Who holds it: ‹ ›
Then: Followed by All
Once the body has agreed a Core Way, everyone does it that way. This is not to crush creativity — it is so the Company is coherent, so a newcomer can learn fast, and so that improvements compound instead of scattering. If someone believes there is a better way, they do not quietly fork it in their own corner — they raise it as an issue, the body discerns, and the written Way is updated for all. Coherence by consent, not by command.
And: Continuously Improve
Every Core Way is provisional — good enough for now, never sacred. Revisit them as you grow. When you discover a better way, change the writing, and share it up to the Commons so that other Companies inherit your hard-won wisdom and never have to learn it the painful way. A solution found once, anywhere, should bless everyone.
To tend your Core Ways is to live the whole System: that everything is a process, that the body holds its wisdom in common, that we improve forever rather than arrive, and that what one community learns, all may receive.
