Differentiation

Differentiation is the act of distinguishing this from that — the perceptual and cognitive move by which a finite being separates the seamless field of Reality into discernible Objects, qualities, and relationships. It is the first move of map-making: before anything can be named, categorized, or understood, it must first be told apart.

Differentiation is necessary and good — without it there is no perception, no language, no action, no Understanding. But it is a tool of the map, not a property of the territory. What has been differentiated remains, in Ultimate Reality, undivided. The mature mind differentiates cleanly and remembers the unity beneath its distinctions — dividing to understand, without forgetting that it was the mind that drew the lines.

Together with Categorization, differentiation is the process through which each being's subjective Map of Reality comes into being.
